This is kind of a big deal for me because I spend a lot of time working with redstone. I have a very big base that I have just started on. In order to claim the base with griefprevention, I would need to get over 2500 more claim blocks, so I claimed it with towny. Now I find out that I can't use pistons in my own town because it isn't protected with griefprevention.

I think this is very unnecessary and unfair to force people to use the grief prevention. It almost makes me think that this server is trying to money grab, seeing as you disabled buying claim blocks with in-game money and sell claim blocks for real money.

Please allow pistons to move outside of claims, or at least allow us to buy claim blocks.

EDIT: I checked to make sure that this is easily changeable, and it is.

Piston limiting - Version 8.1.7 and higher. Pistons won't move blocks outside of land claims. This is a huge performance win, but if you want the old rules back, there's a new config option to disable this rule. Yes, players do get an explanation/warning when they place pistons outside of land claims, to avoid confusion for newly-placed pistons.

I can see why pistons are disabled out side of land claims. It may prove problematic if someone decided to rig up a griefing tool with sticky pistons overnight and make things difficult for someone they had a problem with.

As far as buying claim space is concerned, I think it is a big far-fetched to suggest that the claim system might be being milked for profit. All the money that is earned via donations and purchases goes right back into the server (which is why we're able to afford having several servers running at once). Keep in mind that claim blocks are also earned for playing on the server, so the longer you've been playing, the more claim blocks you have at your disposal.

I'm here to point out it's very unlikely you are going to get griefed and if you do staff can be right there to catch the culprit and replace your work. Also, a solution could be is start off with a small claim and gradually expand that claim.
